When God Shows Up

Don't you just love it when God shows up in the little things?  I know I do.  Actually, that is what this blog is dedicated to...God in the little things.  That is why I write about nutrition, breastfeeding, babies, essential oils and more; I believe God gave us those gifts and can be seen in all of them.

Today I was feeling stressed.  Nothing big, just Mommy stress.  My oldest was being belligerent and rude at every turn, and my efforts at teaching her kindness seemed endlessly hopeless today.  My youngest is beyond tired, yet my three efforts to get him to take a nap (which he usually loves) have all failed.

So, I did what any wonderful Mom would do; I packed them up in the car and took a short drive.  That is where God showed up!

First, it began to rain, and God's nourishing goodness rained down on our parched land bringing a refreshing over our plants and trees.  (Maybe that is why everyone was grumpy...we were waiting for rain).

Next, as KSBJ was playing on the radio I began to hear my youngest's voice echo out the words to Hallelujah:

Jesus, please come, please come today
Heal me, hear me, be near me I pray

Hallelujah

Let me tell you, there is nothing that straightens out an attitude so quickly (especially a grumpy Mom) than hearing her son sing praises to God!

How to Increase Your Milk Supply

Having successfully breastfed two babies of my own until they weaned themselves (one is still nursing); I have friends, family and sometimes even strangers ask me how a nursing mother can increase her milk supply?  It isn't always just ONE thing so I have accumulated a list that I hope helps you, and that you can share with all your nursing friends.

First, remember that breastfeeding is a natural occurrence, and with a little help and encouragement you can be well on your way to a satisfying experience for both you and baby.  It is important that you do NOT allow your baby to 'nipple' feed, but rather to 'breast feed'.  By breast feed I mean that the baby must open his/her mouth wide and latch on to what seems like a huge mouthful for such a small person!  If done correctly this will not be painful for Momma.  It is important to note that breastfeeding is not a 'sucking' action from baby, but more of a 'kneeding/pulling' action; something that a pump does not exactly replicate.

A breastfeeding mother's body naturally creates milk according to her baby's personal demand.  The more baby nurses or the longer baby nurses the more milk your body will produce in the following days.  Baby's sucking is the trigger that tells your body to make more!  If your baby needs more, but you are pumping then you need to pump more often and longer, allowing your body to have multiple 'let downs' of milk in each pump session, and signaling to your body to produce more milk in the following days

Dehydration and poor nutrition can negatively effect your milk supply.  You must continue to take your full dose of prenatal vitamins for as long as you nurse or pump.  You must also increase your daily caloric intake by 500 good and nutritional calories per day (500 more than you needed during pregnancy).  Drink a glass of water EVERY time you nurse or pump in addition to your regular 8-10 cups per day.  All of this will not only increase your milk supply, but will also make for a healthy and happy Momma and baby!

Stress is huge in not allowing your body to produce milk or have a let down.  Momma, take time for yourself.  Take a bath or a nap.  Read a few pages in a book or pray, but work away those stresses BEFORE you sit down to nurse or pump and it will be a much more enjoyable experience.  I would always use the restroom, grab a snack and a glass of water to set next to me and get comfy to nurse or pump.

Alcohol reduces your milk supply, so refrain completely, or at least a few hours before nursing.

If you are supplementing with formula, but desire to supplement less and nurse more then you need to allow baby to nurse BEFORE you give him/her the bottle.  This will tell your body to make more milk the next day.  Also, if you are pumping you need to pump at every feeding (even the supplement feedings) to tell your body to produce more milk in the following days.

Fennel essential oil has been know to increase milk supply.  Simply take it in a spoonful of honey or under the tongue before nursing, and rub over chest.  Note: stay away from peppermint essential oil, it has been know to decrease milk supply; although I have not had that issue!

Mostly, enjoy your baby!  Snuggle, cuddle, kiss and hold.  A happy Momma make good milk.

Is Your Fruit Ripe?

I have often asked myself this same question a thousand times, "Is this fruit ripe?"  I wonder if it will be sweet or still hard and sour when I bite into it.  And what about melons?  Watermelons, cantaloupe, honeydew???  How do you know if it is a good one?  I think we would all benefit from learning when our fruit is ripe, so check out Kristina's video here on ripe fruit...it is worth the watching!  If you don't have time to sit and watch I have created a list for you below.  Enjoy!

Ripe fruit is higher in nutrition and your body absorbs that nutrition more readily.

5 Things to Remember When Selecting Fruit
1. Sight
2. Smell
3. Taste
4. Touch
5. Sound

Melons: Slightly soft at the end where the stem was, smell super sweet.
Watermelon: Sounds hollow, tight skin (not wrinkled or bruised)
Bananas: Brown speckled to get all the simple sugars and nutrition
Plantain: Entirely black (very heavy in carbs)
Red Bananas: Dark maroon, very soft, give a little at tip
Berries: Immediately
Blue Berries: Can be kept in fridge 1-2 weeks and are sweeter when a little wrinkly
Beats: Cut off top and leave on counter up to 2 weeks, when wrinkly can eat like an apple
Zucchini/Cucumbers/Pickles: Best when fresh, can keep in fridge up to 2 weeks
Tomatoes: Never store in fridge, sweetest when left out or in sunshine
Citrus: Ready when picked off tree
Pears: Sit out 3-4 days until a little ugly and soft
Apples: Anytime
Mango: Smell sweet, very soft, oily shine and sweat
Peaches/Nectarine: Smell sweet, soft, very juicy
Avocado: Soft to touch
Persimmon: Mushy, almost melt
Papaya: Bright orange, look beaten up, soft to touch, smell sweet
Pineapple: Turn completely yellow/orange, smell delicious, leaves begin to curl under, can twist tip off by hand

How to Eat a Fully Raw Diet

Some of you out there are asking, "How can I eat a fully raw, vegan diet?"  That is a great question!  I am not vegan or fully raw (yet), but am slowly moving in that direction.  I think it is something that takes time and practice focusing on one meal/snack at a time.

Check out this video from Kristina at Fully Raw and Rawfully Organic.  She explains everything!  Oh, and she doesn't just eat a plate of fruit or a big salad, she also has some awesome raw recipes like fettuccine Alfredo (zucchini for noodles), lasagna, carrot/apple/beat salad, smoothies, desserts and more!

Leave comments below about your adventures in health and let me know if her video helped you.

Your Honor Is Showing

It amazes me at how young our precious children begin to show that sin nature they were born with.  It is almost immediately!  My 18-month old already has fits of temper when he does not get his way, and defiantly says, "No" if I ask him to do something he doesn't like.  But as a Mom (or any parent) it is our job to continue teaching our children through these tough moments.  Don't get me wrong, I have great kids that love to listen and obey (sometimes), but that immature and selfish part of them shows from time-to-time.

So what do we do to combat this?  I have a lot of patience, do a lot of praying, and we communicate all the time!  Yes, I have long and meaningful conversations with my toddlers.  Actually, I started having these conversations with them when they were still in the womb.  I truly believe that learning begins even before birth and does not end here on earth until we take our final breath.  I also know that our children will act as old as we treat them, so I always treat them as if they do/will understand; but I also make sure they understand and not just assume they do.

OK, so you communicate...what else?  I try to teach them manners, obedience, respect and honor.  These can be so easy to teach and so tricky to teach all at the same time!

Manners are something that my hubby and I have taught our kiddos from day 1, and it has been successful.  Simple things like saying 'please', 'thank you', 'sorry', 'may I', 'yes Mam', 'no Sir'...  We just simply remind them to say these phrases at appropriate times, and we use them ourselves; after all, we can't expect our children to do something that we don't do ourselves.  And guess what, both of kids use these phrases almost without fail.  Actually, if one of my kids forgets to say one of those, like 'thank you', the other child says it for them...really cute!  So if you want to incorporate manners it isn't too difficult.

Obedience is a little trickier than manners because now we are dealing with the child's own personal will and sin nature.  They are quick to obey if it is something they want to do, or if you bribe them, but what about when it is something they don't care about or simply don't understand?  I have found that obedience is easier for them when they comprehend the 'why' behind the task or question from Dad or Mom.  One example would be when my son climbs up and stands on our glass table.  I could simply yell at him to get down and get angry when he doesn't obey, because as you know standing on that table is really fun.  Or I can tell him to get down so he doesn't fall and so the glass doesn't break because that would hurt.  Not only is he more inclined to listen to the explanation, but he may think twice before getting back up on that table next time!

Respect is a whole other creature.  It is a mixture of obedience and understanding along with desire.  Huh?  Well, for instance, my daughter once went through a stage where she loved to pull on my shirt and clothes (now my son is in that stage).  I can yell and get aggravated telling her to stop ALL DAY LONG, or I can explain.  "Sissy, don't pull on Mommy's shirt because it can stretch it out or tear it, and then it would be ruined.  Remember, we respect our clothes and don't destroy them."  Ah Ha!  Now I see, we respect them and don't destroy them.  We do the same thing with our toys.  Can you believe that with two children ages 18-months and 4-years old that we have never lost or broken a toy?  That is also part of teaching respect.  After playing all day we have our kids put their toys away (we actually do the majority of the putting away, but they help) and while singing the 'Clean Up' song we also tell them that we put the toys back where they belong so we will always know where they are when we want to play with them next time.  We respect our things so we don't have to replace them.  Somehow the idea of respect rings true in their little minds already.

Honor?!?!?  Now how do you teach honor?  I'm not really sure.  I think of honor as a desire to please and respect.  Wikipedia defines honor as: 'an abstract concept entailing a perceived quality of worthiness and respectability that affects both the social standing and the self-evaluation of an individual or corporate body such as a family, school, regiment or nation.'  So basically we become worthy of honor through respect!  Wow, that is intense.  The Bible has a lot to say about children honoring their parents.  Actually, honor is the first commandment that also comes with a promise.  What is the promise?  That you may live long in the land the Lord is giving you!  OK, so pretty important.  I think you teach honor by being an honorable person.  By lavishing love and grace over your children, and by honoring those in authority over you.  Yup.  So if your children or others do not honor you then evaluate what you are doing to get/recieve that honor...your answer may lie there.  I will find out when my kids become teenagers and adults, but for now I will relish having my little ones honor me to the degree they can, just as I learn to honor my God above.

Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise— Ephesians 6:2

Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you. Exodus 20:12

Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and that it may go well with you in the land the LORD your God is giving you. Deuteronomy 5:16

Do you have good manners?  Do you teach your children good manners?  What are manners anyway?  How about obedience, respect and honor...how do you handle those?  Leave your comments below and let's learn from eachother!

Frankincense

Today I wanted to talk about my absolutely favorite essential oil...FRANKINCENSE!!!!

There are other oils that do a lot that my family relies upon heavily, and I am sure I would call them my favorite oils also, but Frankincense is still my absolute favorite.  Maybe it is because it is mentioned so much in the Bible.  Did you know that essential oils are mentioned hundreds of times in scripture, and frankincense is mentioned over 50 times itself?  Maybe it is because it smells so good and is really uplifting.  Could it be because it was one of the gifts the 3 Wise Men brought baby Jesus?  Yes, it is all of those and so much more!  Frankincense just does so much, is so very gentle and feels so good when being used.

When my daughter, Mackenzie, was a baby frankincense was my 'go to' oil.  It was gentle enough to use full strength on her delicate baby skin, yet it worked so quickly to resolve whatever issue I was using it for (usually stuffy nose or cough).  It was also very calming!  As we all know, a baby with a stuffy nose or a cough is fidgety and irritated, but whenever I would apply the frankincense she would calm down and enjoy breathing it in.  She loved it (and lavender) so much that when she was old enough she began asking for them by name.

Frankincense is naturally antitumoral, an immunostimulant, an antidepressant and muscle relaxing.  It is great for depression, respiratory infections and inflammation.  It is also immune stimulating.

I like to use frankincense to enhance the properties of other oils I am using.  For instance, if I am using lavender for a deep tissue bruise I would also apply frankincense to deepen and enhance the lavender.

I was using lavender to clear up a sty in my eye and it worked after about 3 days of use.  I kept getting these sty's in my eye and kept using the lavender and again after about 3 days it would clear up (before I used lavender the sty would last 1-2 weeks).  After several successful uses of lavender I decided to use frankincense before bed on the first day I noticed I had a sty; and guess what?  The sty was GONE the next morning and I have never had another sty in either of my eyes...and that was over a year ago!

Now, take the story above and replace the word sty with mouth cold sores.  The exact same thing happened, I used lavender and they would go away after a few days.  I used frankincense and GONE overnight, never to return!  See why I love this oil?  It just seems to work so very quickly for me, and thus far has eradicated the very root of the issue in multiple situations.

Testimony for Arthritis Pain:  A customer of mine had severe arthritis pain in her wrists and could hardly do specific tasks like open jars, turn door knobs...  I recommended PanAway for her use and also told her that she could use frankincense on top of the PanAway to drive the oils deeper into the joints.  I assured her that it really does work, and that she may want to heavily dilute the PanAway because it is such a strong oil.  When she received her oils she was so excited, but because she had been living with such sever pain for so long she did what I said without diluting.  She said it burned intensely for about 10 minutes, but after that the pain in her wrists was gone, and it didn't return for several days!  The more she used it the longer she went without pain!  So exciting!

I also use frankincense to anoint my new born babies when I pray over them, and to anoint people when I pray for healing.  Before I go to a prayer meeting I also like to put a few drops in the palms of my hands and just sit before the Lord in prayer while breathing in the aroma.  It is powerful yet calming all at once.  It seems to usher in the presence of the Lord; the very atmosphere I want to keep in my home!

Combat Allergies with Essential Oils

Indoor, Outdoor and Seasonal Allergies are yuck!  They can make us downright miserable, and other than prescription medications, over-the-counter medications, or simply suffering is there anything else we can do?

Well, yes, there may be another option.  Have you tried therapeutic grade essential oils?  There are actually quite a few essential oils that can help with the symptoms of those pesky allergies, and some oils can even help to ward off the allergies completely if used at the right time.

German chamomile, wintergreen, lavender, Roman chamomile and peppermint are all essential oil recommendations for allergies (plus many more oil blends).  Let me tell you some of my family's experiences, and my new favorite way to combat allergies once they hit.

One of the great things about essential oils is that they can be used anywhere and anytime.  If you feel like you need more you can apply more!  One of the things my family tries to keep in mind is prevention, but with a busy lifestyle and two kids sometimes we forget.  My husband gets awful itchy eyes and nose after mowing the lawn or going on a nature walk, but if we use preventative measures he can usually avoid those symptoms all together, or greatly reduce them.  I created a special blend of extra virgin olive oil, lavender, peppermint and just a hint of frankincense and put it in a roller bottle just for my husband.  Before he goes out to do yard work I have him roll those oils around the bony part of his eyes and on the bridge of his nose.  I also have him inhale them deeply.  If we forget to have him do that before yard work he will do several applications after yard work to help with the allergy symptoms.  He actually prefers his oils full strength, so sometimes he will just take peppermint and inhale deeply (caution, this will burn!).

The kids sometimes get a bit of runny nose or itchy eyes, and I like to use RC and Breathe Again on them.  I use diluted RC around the bony part of their eyes and on the bridge of their little noses (or sometimes I just use lavender)  I also use Breathe Again Roll On, and it is great!  I put the Breathe Again on their chest and on the bottom of their toes and arch of the foot.  It works wonders for my little boy!

As for myself, I use all of the above!  Just whichever one sounds like it will feel the best at that time.  But I have discovered a new way to halt my ugly allergy symptoms and I LOVE it.  If I am already suffering and need relief I will place a drop of Lavender under my tongue (kind of bitter tasting) and allow it to soak in, and then I will place a drop of peppermint on the tip of my tongue and press it to the roof of my mouth!  I use both oils full strength, and it works great for me; after only two applications I have not yet needed to reapply.

Do you use Essential Oils?  Comment below on what works for you!

What do you think, should I do it?  If so, I think I am going to do a dessert.

If I enter I will post the recipe, pictures and links here so you can vote for me and get all of your family and friends to vote for me.  So, do it?  Help!!!!

Postpartum Nutrition

I know I owe you a post about Essential Oils with Allergies, but because my sister-in-law became a first time Mommy yesterday (and I became an Auntie 7 times over) I have decided to do a post on postpartum nutrition in honor of the phase she is entering into now.

Congrats Kelly on you new precious bundle!

Pregnancy and child rearing is not a sprint, but rather a marathon that takes training and good nutrition to keep the course strong.  We tend to focus on nutrition both before and during pregnancy, but after the baby is born Mommas health seems to get lost in the shuffle and everything is poured into that tiny bundle of joy.  Rather, the opposite is needed.  It takes a strong and healthy Momma to give wonderful care to her precious baby and husband.  If Mommas not healthy, then everyone else will suffer.

Think about this, you have just carried a life inside your body for 9-months.  Everything you ate went into creating that child's organs (heart, lungs brain),bones, muscles, reflexes and more.  Actually, your body was turned into a creation ground, everything that baby has was given by your nutrition, exercise, rest and how you took care of yourself.  If you did not give baby something that it needed in your diet the baby took it from the stores in your body; from your own bones, muscles and fat stores.  Not only did you give to your baby nutritionally, but you also gave emotionally.  Every emotion you felt, the baby felt, and every word you spoke the baby heard; your hormones passed through the baby's body just as they passed through yours.  You have already been helping to build your sweet child's personality just by the way you felt during your pregnancy!  Wow, how powerful is that!  Not only does a pregnant Mother feed good things into her baby, but she can also pass negative things such as toxins.  The placenta is an excellent barrier, but alcohol, nicotine, poor nutrition and other medications can still pass through to the baby, and that is why we focus so much on health during pregnancy.

But what about after the baby is born?

I consider the phase after baby is born (postpartum) to be just as important (or even more important to Momma) as the pregnancy phase.  Why?  Because that baby has been pulling on your body for 9-months and you may be (and probably are) depleted.  Also, you just gave birth, a tremendous exercise feat, and must fully recover.  You may have also had surgery via a c-section and need to recover from not only carrying a baby and birthing a baby, but also recover from surgery!  During your recovery time you are also expected to continue caring for this new baby, and if you have chosen to breastfeed you will be giving more than ever before!

A breastfeeding Mother actually needs 500 more calories on a daily basis than when they were pregnant.  It takes that much to produce milk all day long and to properly nourish baby.  Not only that, but breast milk is the baby's only source of immune defense.  Baby's own immune system doesn't even kick in until around 1-year of age.

But before considering the number of calories you need you must first consider the type of food you need to eat.

First, continue taking your prenatal vitamins and calcium supplement!  Your prenatals will help you in breastfeeding and help to restore the personal nutrients you have given away.  They will also help your milk supply.

Second, if breastfeeding add 500 calories to your daily diet (good, nutritious calories).  You will still lose weight, so do NOT go on a diet to lose baby weight.  That is the worst thing you can do for your body, further depleting what you actually need.  Do not even think about dieting for at least 6 months.

Third, carefully plan the first meals you will have after giving birth.  You will be exhausted, but still have a long haul set before you.  You will be changing diapers and doing midnight feedings.  You will be rocking and calming and just getting to know your baby, and you must have energy for that.  Remember, low fat but high nutrient is best.  I suggest a hearty veggie stew or veggie and beef/chicken stew that is full of wonderful and rich vitamins straight from the earth.  (use organic ingredients whenever possible, Momma and baby do not need to eat pesticides and herbicides.)  The broth alone will be hearty and filling!  Not only that, but good sources of protein and calcium such as legumes, spinach, nuts, green leafy veggies, eggs and chicken are a must.  And if you have a crock pot, now is the time to become friends with it!

Fourth, if people offer to cook meals or bring food, accept their offer.  Make sure they know you want healthy food and let them know what you do not like, otherwise enjoy the variety and not having to worry over meals.

Fifth, REST!  I can not stress this enough; especially if you had surgery or tore.  REST, REST, REST.  Do not get out of bed until you have slept the amount you normally would sleep.  For example, if you need 8 hours of sleep but you were up two hours at night with the baby then you should not get out of bed until 10 hours have passed.  To help with this wear your pajamas and let others help (especially Daddy).  Sleep when baby sleeps, and for TWO WEEKS just let your body heal while you are in that wonderful baby moon stage.  Snuggle and rest!  No heavy lifting, no grocery shopping for 2 weeks.  Don't even make your own meals for 1 week.  A fully healed body early on will help fight against infection, bleeding, tearing, and fatigue in the long run!

Sixth, smile, laugh, cuddle and enjoy your new family!  You, hubby and baby are a brand new family, so soak it in and enjoy!  The baby still recognizes your moods and feeds off of them.  If you are stressed you will find that baby gets stressed and cries, so stay relaxed, and if you need some time to yourself to de-stress, take it; everyone will be happier in the long run.  Plus, baby will not nurse and you will not release milk if you are stressed.  On the contrary, if you are happy and relaxed you will find that breastfeeding is easier and baby is happier.

One more thing.  WATER.  Drink LOTS of water.  And if you are nursing drink a large glass of water every time you feed baby in addition to the regular water you drink.  You should pee clear all day, every day!

Why worry about this and go through so much trouble?  Well, it helps to combat postpartum depression, helps to give baby what they need, helps to set a calm and healthy atmosphere in the home, and will help Momma in the long run too!

Foods I like to keep on hand after having a baby: Greek Yogurt, almonds, walnuts, dried apricots, organic granola, bananas, apples, oatmeal, eggs, fresh cut organic fruits and veggies, easy to reheat meals like soups, stews and premade (homemade) freezer meals.

Do you have suggestions on nutrition, health or other postpartum advice?  Leave in comments below, us Mommas need to stick together and learn from eachother!

Here are a few pictures of my own precious babies when they were born:

Which Princess Are You?

I'd like to lighten things up for the weekend and ask, "Which princess are you?"  or "Which princess is your little princess?"

Having a 4-year old daughter, princesses are often the subject of talk around here.  As a 3-year old her favorite princess was Cinderella, but not that she is 4 she has graduated to Sleeping Beauty's Aurora.  If she had her way we would watch Sleeping Beauty all day long while she wore high hills and a frilly dress, and occasionally she would ask her little brother (18 months) to dance with her and be Prince Charming.  We did go through a short fairy and Tinker Bell stage, and although she truly adores Tinker Bell, the princesses win out!  She may like Aurora, but I think she looks more like Rapunzel with her green eyes and long hair.

As a child I also loved Sleeping Beauty (actually, she was my favorite), but if I am honest I think I am more of a Pocahontas or Snow White in person (for different reasons, obviously).

My little princess (and prince) twirling before church.

So, leave a comment below and let us read your princess (or prince) story!

Laundry Dryer Sheets vs. Wool Dryer Balls

I think I am really going to enjoy typing this post simply because I love my wool dryer balls!

Years ago someone had mentioned to me how dangerous laundry dryer sheets are and although I heard what they said and listened intently, I simply did not know what to do about that in my own life.  So, I kept using them.  Then, when my first child began potty training I no longer wanted to go out and purchase disposable diapers to be thrown away all day long and went ahead and purchased cloth diapers.  Well guess what?  You can't use cloth diapers with laundry dryer sheets.  Actually, you can't even use the dryer sheets in the dryer for other clothes because they coat the dryer and can in turn ruin the cloth diapers even though they were used in a different laundry load.  So I did the unthinkable; I cleaned my dryer out with mild soap and water and our family stopped using dryer sheets!  The good news was that I immediately noticed that my skin was not longer itchy (even though I had been using the free and clear dryer sheets), but I also immediately noticed that our clothes had more wrinkles, were not as soft and even a little stiff, and had AWFUL static!  For the next year and a half we put up with the negative side effects of not using the dryer sheets because we found out they they were far better than the negative effects of using the dryer sheets.  Plus, the cost adds up fast when you do as much laundry as our family.  Then, by the grace of God, we discovered wool dryer balls.  They get rid of static, cut drying time, soften clothes and can be used while drying cloth diapers!  Also, they last for years!

Have you ever read the ingredients of Laundry Dryer Sheets?  No, neither did I.  Let's take a look together at what they contain and how they work so you can decide what you want to do for your family.

Here is a short list of some of the ingredients found in the most popular laundry dryer sheets:
  • Benzyl Acetate: Linked to pancreatic cancer
  • Benzyl Alcohol: Upper respiratory tract irritant

How do dryer sheets work?  Well, when the dryer sheets are put into the dryer with laundry, the heat and moisture warm up the chemicals and spread those chemicals across the clothing.  The chemicals are designed to stay on the clothes for long periods of time, not leaving until the next time they are washed.  So when you wear that clothing your skin is absorbing those chemicals all day long, and your nose is breathing those chemical in.  Yikes!

If you have sensitive skin or allergies (or simply desire to live a more chemical free life) you may consider an alternative.

As I mentioned above, it took my family quite some time to discover an alternative that was not also chemical laden, and we found that wool dryer balls was that answer for us.

Wool dryer balls are eco-friendly and chemical free.  Not only that, but you are supporting local farms when you use them.  We use 3 dryer balls in our dryer, but will be using 6 balls soon (we have large loads of laundry).  You can use anywhere from 2 to 10 dryer balls in your dryer to reach your desired effect.  The more you use the shorter your clothes drying time is, which also helps to cut down on electric/gas cost of running your dryer!  Your set of dryer balls will last for years to come, so no more expense having to purchase the same item over and over again.  They help eliminate static, soften clothes and reduce drying time.  And if you want a fragrence all you have to do is add a few drops of your favorite essential oils to the balls!

The only drawback is that velcro attaches to them and pulls at the wool, so I simply avoid using them with velcro items.

I have not found wool dryer balls in any store in my area, but rather order mine online here at Farm Fresh Fiber.  Oh, and wool dryer balls are NOT the same as the plastic or rubber dryer balls in the grocery; those are full of chemicals also!

Freedom in Health

I have been reading comments and listening to friends and family that know about our health journey and I wanted to inform the rest of you of what I feel and think.  I am greatful to have such supportive family and friends, but I do realize that some readers out there do not know me.

First, we always thought we were healthy eaters and were (and still are) proud of that fact, but after my daughter showed severe signs of intolerance to artificial food color and other petroleum based food additives we were forced to look more closely at what we were putting into our bodies.  We were shocked at what we found and at what the FDA allows into our food.  Through our personal crash course of learning I thought it would be nice to share the information I have learned with others out there that may also be struggling with their health or their children's health and behavioral issues; or with others that truly care about their health but simply do not know what these ingredients are and what food processing does to our diets and bodies.  I am not trying to force you to use essential oils or eat all organic, become a vegetarian or a raw foodie.  My blog is simply informational and life experiences (along with some fun and light hearted issues) being put out there for the world to read.

Second, I am not telling you to change!  Rather, I believe that change is a personal process brought on by convictions, and I can not dictate your convictions.  Instead, I simply hope to get the information in front of you so you can decide what changes (if any) are important to you and your family.

I believe that ignorance is scary and am personally happy to know more in this area now than I ever have before (as I am sure you know more in other areas).  Actually, I hope to keep learning and sharing what I learn with you over time.  Please, do not feel condemned by any of my posts, but rather take and leave what you want.

By-the-way, I still have junk from time-to-time (but I know when I am doing it); whereas my daughter is simply not able to ever have junk at this time in her life.  Her body goes into complete melt down mode and it lasts for WEEKS!  (I will post on her journey in the future).  As a parents we decided that if one of us can not have something then it is not allowed in our home and we will all have that same diet.  It is only fair that way our 4-year old does not feel left out in the least little bit.  The good news is that she truly enjoys eating like this and literally feels the difference.  She use to suffer from rages and night mares and obedience issues that have been eradicated simply by changing her diet.  If she even has a speck of ingestiable petroleum she actually feels what she calls 'the monster' coming on!  If you or someone in your family suffers from allergies, asthma, hyperactivity, mood swings, depression, skin problems, fatigue, chronic illness or any of the other side effects listed in my Dirty Dozen post then just stop and take a look at what you are putting into your body; it may be the entire cause, partial cause or not have anything to do with you.  You use your good judgement and decide.

Last, I don't want to make anyone obsessive about their eating and health.  I truly just want each person and family unit to find their own convictions and live within their own family's rhythm.  My family has been forced to look at everything, and although it was tricky at first I am truly grateful because since the change we almost never get sick and have more energy.  We just overall feel better!  Not only that, but it is no longer something I think about when shopping or going out; it is now just a normal way of life.  We feel free to be healthy instead of struggle to be healthy!

Easily Eradicate the Dirty Dozen

If you read my previous post about the Dirty Dozen, top twelve foods to avoid, your head may be spinning around at high speeds, or you may be feeling depressed not knowing how you can possibly avoid all (or any) of those ingredients.  Actually, you could now be living in fear.

Let me ease your worries and help you along by telling you what our family did (and is doing) to make the transition from chemical filled life to a more natural life a fairly easy process.  No, we are not completely chemical free yet, but we get closer every time we go grocery shopping or run out of a household item and it is time to replace.

First, stop your worry and fear.  You can not change what has already been done, but now that you are informed you can make wise decisions going forward, and decide what is best for you and your family (even if you only choose one or two things to change).  One of the most simple ways to begin is with your food.  My family has an extremely tight budget where we end some months wondering how God paid all of our bills, filled our bellies and left us a dollar in our account.  Now that we are using higher quality foods and products we are even more amazed that we make it through each month, but that is how God works.  When we learn something new and apply it out of obedience, He provides!

Yes, the foods and products that do not contain the 'Dirty Dozen' are typically more expensive, or you could say that the ones that do contain those fillers are 'cheap'.  But what you save in worry, allergies, doctors visits, fatigue, and medications is well worth it.

Switch Foods First:  Change the foods you eat first.  Anything you ingest is going to have the biggest effect on your body, so foods first is a must.  No, I am not telling you to give up your potato chips (although for some of us that would be a good idea), but rather switch to veggie chips, all natural or organic chips.  If you LOVE Cheetos and just can't give those up then switch to the All Natural ones.  Yes, they make all natural Cheetos!
Go organic!  Many non-organic strawberries are watered and/or washed with Red 40 to make them shine bright red in the grocery (as are many other fruits and veggies washed in food dye).  When you purchase organic fruits and veggies you will not be getting those hidden food colors, pesticides, herbicides and other chemical laden junk.
Almost every food you want is available in organic or all natural, you simply have to look for it.  Other alternatives are Gluten Free, vegetarian and vegan options which usually eliminate that toxic list of additives.  Often just steering clear of the store brands and reading labels will correct the problem.
Also, cook or make your meals whenever possible, and eat raw as often as you can (check out Rawfully Organic for great meal ideas).  Trust me, your mind, body and skin will thank you.
As far as keeping your kiddos happy, just learn to bake from scratch (one or two simple recipes) and find a few dye free candies that you can rotate (like some chocolates, caramel, all natural lollipops...).

Soaps, Shampoos and Toothpastes Second:  Our skin is our largest organ and absorbs everything from pesticides when walking barefoot on the grass to lotions, sun screen and makeup we use daily.  This one is a little easier (with shampoo being the last one you would need to change).  When you run out of a product simply replace it with a better quality of that product.  For example, we use Young Living toothpaste.  And Berts Bees body wash and shampoo.  Grocery stores are now offering many more all natural and organic options; find one you like and use it.

Finally, change all other household items one at a time.  Dryer sheets (more on this to come in a future post), dish detergent, ant killer...  There are natural alternatives for everything.  We are still working on this area in our family and know it will take time, but we are happy that we are on the road we are on, and confident that even if we can not remove all toxins (because we can't) that every little bit helps us on our journey to health and happiness.

*If you want or need to order from Young Living feel free to become a customer under my number 1069772.

Dirty Dozen (Foods to Avoid)

This post is about the top 12 foods you should NEVER EVER, NEVER eat/consume.

Actually, I would not even call most of these foods because they are not derived from plants or animals, but rather are man made fillers and additives found everywhere.  First I will list the twelve items, then we will talk about them one by one.  I am not the one that says to avoid these, but food manufacturers, Doctors, Chemists, Dietitians, Nutritionists and sometimes even the FDA warns to avoid.  You can look all of these up on the FDA's site to see what they say, and read their reason's as to why they allow these in our foods.  I have found that most of the reasons are not good enough for me (such as: it makes food look more appetizing), so I avoid them completely.  **Remember, your skin is your largest organ, so these products can be absorbed by the skin to compromise your body.**  I believe everyone should start small and change one thing at a time.  My family started with food, then cleaners, hand soaps, shampoos...as we ran out of a consumable we replaced with a product not containing these ingredients.

I am of the school of thought that God knew what He was doing when he created our plants and animals (our food sources), so minimally processed is best!  Actually, many of the so-called 'foods' we ingest and consume daily are actually destroying our bodies.  Rather than causing ourselves illness let's learn together what to avoid in order to become the best and healthiest we can personally be.

1 Cor 3:16-17(NIV) Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you? If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him; for God's temple is sacred, and you are that temple.

You can stick with me through this entire post to get a great education, but it may be a little long and tedious; or you can simply scroll down to the items that interest you the most.  I will be doing a post in the near future about all artificial food colors, polysorbates and sicilcas, but for now I am just sticking to the top 12.

Potassium Bromate (E924)

What is it?
A bromate of potassium and takes the form of white crystals or powder.  It is produced by passing bromine into a solution of potassium hydroxide. An industrial electrolytic process is used for large scale production.  It can also be created as a by-product of potassium bromide production by absorption of bromine from ocean water into potassium carbonate.
Elemental potassium is a soft silvery-white alkali metal that oxides rapidly in air and is very reactive with water, generating sufficient heat to ignite the hydrogen emitted in the reaction.
Elemental bromine is a fuming red-brown liquid at room temperature, corrosive and toxic, with properties between those of  chlorine and iodine.
Why is it used?
Used in baking to improve flour and strengthen dough.  If too much is added to the baking, is not baked long enough or at a high enough temperature it will not all cook out which may be harmful if consumed.

Concerns/Warnings:
May cause headaches, facial pressure, sweating and flushing, chest pain with shortness of breath and heart palpitations. Some patients report an overall feeling of weakness.

Aspartame (Equal, NutraSweet, E951)

What is it?
A methyl ester of the aspartic acid/phenylalanine dipeptide.
A Methyl group is an alkyl derived from methane.
Too much aspartame or glutamate in the brain kills certain neurons.
Why is it used?
Artificial sweetener.
Where can it be found?
Low-fat and diet products. (ie: diet soda, low fat yogurt)
Concerns/Warnings:
Because its breakdown products include phenylalanine, aspartame must be avoided by people with the genetic condition phenylketonuria.

In animals it has shown to stimulates insulin secretion, lung tumors, breast tumors, rare types of tumors of other organs (such as the thymus gland), several forms of leukemia and chronic respiratory disease.

Olestra (Olean)

What is it?
Fat substitute that adds no fat, calories, or cholesterol to products.   Made by chemically combining sugar with the fatty acids obtained from vegetable oils.
Why is it used?
Lower fat content of food.
Where can it be found?
Potato Chips, other high fat foods to make low fat.
Concerns/Warnings:
FDA-mandated health warning label "This Product Contains Olestra. Olestra may cause abdominal cramping and loose stools. Olestra inhibits the absorption of some vitamins and other nutrients. Vitamins A, D, E, and K have been added (particular issue to those taking blood-thinning medications).  This warning label has since been removed.
Olestra reportedly flushes carotenoids from the body as well. Carotenoids are the plant pigments that make fruits and vegetables red, yellow or orange, and they're also found in green leafy vegetables. Research shows that carotenoids protect the body against diseases such as cancer, heart disease and macular degeneration, a form of blindness.

Sodium Nitrite (Sodium Nitrate) (do not add to foods)

What is it?
The salt is prepared by treating sodium hydroxide with mixtures of nitrogen dioxide and nitric oxide
Nitrates are not harmful, but can easily be converted to nitrites. This conversion occurs at high temperatures e.g. frying cured meat at high temperatures.
It is well known that nitrites combine with amines to form nitrosoamines which are known to be dangerous cancer-causing compounds.
Why is it used?
Without sodium nitrite, these products’ shelf life would be shortened substantially.  Preventing botulism.  Prevent the growth of Listeria monocytogenes.  Used as a color fixative and to manufacture certain dyes.
Where can it be found?
Cured meats like ham, bacon and hot dogs.
Concerns/Warnings:
Sodium nitrite is a strong oxidizer, so it should not come into contact with any organic chemicals. Contact with other chemicals may cause an explosion or violent decomposition.
nitrites form nitrosamines and increase your risk of cancer whether or not you're pregnant, eating nitrite-containing foods is particularly dangerous during pregnancy, because nitrites can cross the placenta. When they do, they result in the potential for damage to the developing fetus. For instance, a 1999 study published in the "International Journal of Cancer" notes that consuming nitrate- or nitrite-preserved meats during pregnancy increases a child's risk of brain tumors.
  1. Brain tumour in Children:Children born by mothers who consume high quantities of cured meat (cured with nitrites) during pregnancy have 2-3 time risk of developing brain tumour than those born by mothers who do not consume cured meat.
  2. Cancer: Nitrites have been shown to contribute to a number of cancers. These include: Stomach cancer, Pancreatic cancer and Colo rectal Cancer
  3. DNA mutations: Consumption of cured hot dogs have been shown to have compounds that cause DNA-mutation. If DNA mutations occur, they can cause cancer.

Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil

What is it?
A solid fat that does not go rancid easily and doesn't have any real taste.  Hydrogenation is a complicated process. Vegetable seeds are cleaned and bleached to remove all color, taste, smells and impurities. The liquid vegetable oil is then heated to high temperatures and a catalyst (commonly nickel, but could be palladium, platinum or rhodium) is added. Hydrogen is bubbled through the liquid. The mixture is then filtered to remove the metal, leaving hydrogenated vegetable oil.
Why is it used?
Gives a uniform product that is solid at room temperature and has a long shelf life.
Where can it be found?
Commercially prepared baked foods, snack foods and processed foods.  Often in deep fried foods and desserts in restaurants.
Concerns/Warnings:
The hydrogenation process changes the nature of some of the fats into a form that is not easily recognised by the body (trans fatty acids).
Shown to increase cholesterol levels, which can lead to cardiovascular problems.
Can increase blood pressure, cause cancer, high cholesterol.

Blue 1 & Blue 2 (Brilliant Blue)

What is it?
Petroleum-derived triphenylmethane used as an artificial coloring found in beverages, candy, baked goods, icing, liquid antibiotics and more.
Why is it used?
To provide a brilliant blue color and to make food look more appetizing/appealing.
Where can it be found?
Beverages, candy, icing, baked goods, canned peas, liquid antibiotics, shampoos, soaps and much more.
Concerns/Warnings:
There is no allergy test for food dyes, and because they are not IgE reactions they are often known as food intolerance instead of allergies.  I just call them poison since they are not food and are derived from petroleum.
Can cause eczema, hives, swollen eyelids, dry skin, sneezing, ear infections (often recurring), congestion, wheezing, anaphylaxis, constipation, vomiting, bloating, tummy pains, diarrhea.

Headaches, migraines, anxiety, crying, fatigue, hyperactivity and behavior problems are common in children.

The Feingold Association of the United States states that Blue 1 can also cause chromosomal damage which changes or breaks chromosomes of cells.

Symptoms may not show up immediately, but can often show up days later.  For some, a small amount is a huge issue, but for others they may not see a problem until days after eating an entire bag of candy containing Blue dyes.

Red 3 & Red 40 (Allura Red)

What is it?
Originally manufactured from coal tar, but is now mostly made from petroleum.
Why is it used?
To color foods and other products.  To make food more appealing looking.
Where can it be found?
Kool-aid, orange and other flavored sodas, cheetos and dorito chips, strawberry pop-tarts, any candy with red coloring to it including m&m's, skittles, many chewing gums, etc. Also many children's vitamins and pain relievers/cold medicine. Make up, soaps, shampoos and more.
Concerns/Warnings:
In children it has been known to cause temper tantrums, hyperactivity, aggressive behavior, uncontrollable crying and screaming, kicking, nervousness, dizziness, inability to concentrate and sit still.  In adults it can cause frequent headaches or migraines, upset stomach.
In Europe, Allura Red AC is not recommended for consumption by children. It is banned in Denmark , Belgium, France and Switzerland.

Yellow 5 & Yellow 6 (Tartrazine, E102)
