Raindrop Technique Part 10 - Peppermint

Our Raindrop series comes to a close with an everyday oil: Peppermint!

With Young Living's Raindrop Technique the ninth oil applied is Peppermint.  Some people apply this oil last, and other like to add another layer of Valor.  Along with the many benefits Peppermint essential oil contains, it is also a driver oil.  What is a driver oil?  Well, it is an oil that helps to 'drive' the previously applied oils deeper into the body.

Here is a little bit about Peppermint oil:

Getting Started - Essential Oils Guide

Good morning! My name is Adryan Dupre, I’m a stay at home mom for my two BEAUTIFUL girls, and I’m a very strong advocate for and educator on Essential Oils and their place in our personal health care system.  My background is in Chemical Engineering, which I studied at University of Texas at Austin (go horns!) and which has helped me quite a bit in understanding the science behind why essential oils are so effective at treating our common ailments, and cleansing our environment. But most of all, I just want to do what’s best for my family, and even without understanding the chemistry, I see the effectiveness with my own two eyes every time I turn to my oils as a first line of defense. I’ve found I almost never need my old standby pharmaceuticals anymore, and our visits to the pediatricians office are very few, and far between.

Lemon, Lavender, and Peppermint are arguably the three most versatile essential oils available to us as natural alternatives to the current synthetic norm. They also happen to be three of my personal favorites. For my daughters, 2 years old and 9 months, at least one of these oils makes its way out of the box to come to our rescue on a daily basis. Setting a goal of incorporating these three oils into your daily routine is both a GREAT way for newcomers to get started with essential oils, and for seasoned natural remedy veterans to recommit to a more natural lifestyle. So let’s talk a little bit about how each of these oils can be used on a daily basis to improve the health and wellness of our families.

Lavender:

Lavender has innumerable applications, and therapeutic. That said, for the purposes of this blog I’m going to focus on some practical application, rather than the somewhat dry details about the chemical constituents that make each oil so beneficial. So! Here are my favorite everyday uses of Lavender:

·         Bath time with my girls. I put a few drops in the bathwater to help them start winding down for bed. Lavender is very calming, and has a sedative and soothing effect, which is especially good for children when they need their rest.

·         Massages for any and all of my family. For the same reason that I put it in the bath water, we also apply it directly to the skin to relieve tension, stress, as well as pain from sore muscles. Great to use for a couples massage when you and your husband just need a little one-on-one time after the kiddos have gone to bed.

·         A sleep aid. I put a drop or so on my children’s lovies and blankets that they sleep with. Not only does the aroma therapy of the lavender help them sleep, I’m also creating a conditioned response for them by associating the smell of lavender with safety, security, and rest. My hope is that as adults, they will have a tool to help them battle nights of insomnia or restlessness and stress both biochemically, and emotionally.

·         Lastly, I love lavender for sunburns. It has pain killing properties, as well as great skin healing properties that are a great combination when it comes to pesky sunburns. I put about 10 drops in a 4 oz. glass spray bottle, and fill the rest with water. When I need to apply, I shake it up and spray it on my girls skin where they got a little too much sun. Be careful with all essential oils not to get it in your or your children’s eyes!

Lemon:

Once again, the therapeutic properties of lemon are astonishing, but focusing on more specific application, here are my favorite uses for lemon!

·         Digestive aid. A drop of lemon in a cup of cold water in the morning is a great way to kick start your digestive tract for the day in a healthy, beneficial way.

·         Foot odor. My husband is a runner. A runner who often can’t find a pair of socks, for some baffling reason, and leaves the house with just his tennis shoes on to sweat profusely in the 100+ degree Houston summer heat. You can see where I’m going with this. A couple drops of lemon in his shoes works WONDERS against persistent foot odor.

·         Goo-be-gone. Lemon oil works amazingly well to get pesky stickers and gluey substances off of hard surfaces. I use it regularly for this purpose, and I can vouch for its effectiveness!

·         Fruit/Veggie freshness extender. You can put a drop of lemon in a LARGE bowl of water, and rinse your apple slices, or other fruits and veggies in it to help prolong their edibility. A little goes a long way for this!

Peppermint:

Last but not least, we come to peppermint. My essential oil brand of choice is doTERRA®, for many reasons. One of which deals with the fact that they source their oils from the parts of the plant with the most therapeutic value, and ONLY those parts of the plant. Peppermint oil, therefore, is extracted from the LEAVES of the peppermint plant only, rather than the entire plant. For that reason, doTERRA® peppermint oil smells and tastes very sweet, rather than earthy as you find with many other brands. This makes their peppermint oil unique, and useful in even more ways.

·         Headaches. You will be AMAZED at how effective peppermint can be on a headache. Apply a drop to your fingers, and rub it into your temples, and you’ll feel instant cooling, and almost immediately start to feel your headache pain diminishing. This is my first medicine I reach for when I feel a headache coming on.

·         Cooling mist. A few drops in a spray bottle with water makes a great cooling mist for the summers. It has a very cooling effect on skin, similar to the Icy Hot type muscle relievers. For my children in the summertime, this is a great tool to have in my purse for when they start to get overheated running around like little hellions. J

·         Breath Freshener. You won’t get much fresher than this, and there’s no sugar to worry about rotting your teeth like with breath mints. That same cooling mist bottle I use for my kids, is perfect for this purpose as well. Just remember, once again, to make sure that the oil doesn’t get in to you or your children’s eyes! Also make sure that the brand of oil you choose is safe to be taken internally, like doTERRA®.

·         Baking. I’m a big baker J I mean, I bake a lot, not that I’m severely overweight… though the baking I’m sure isn’t helping me with this stubborn post-pregnancy weight. sigh. Anyway, because the doTERRA® peppermint is so sweet, it makes a great addition to candy, and chocolate in the kitchen. Not too much, as one drop of their peppermint oil is equivalent to 28 cups of herbal tea. It’s VERY potent. But very tasty as well.

There are so many other reasons to use these three oils, and countless other ways to incorporate them into your daily routine, but I hope that this will at least give you a starting point! Don’t be intimidated to jump right in, you’ll be so happy you did. And I’m always available to offer any information or help I have with questions or concerns. My fondness for these oils led me to decide to pursue an opportunity to educate and spread the word about essential oil use and application, and for that reason I decided to start supporting my favorite brand, and if you have any questions for me as to WHY I chose doTERRA®, I’d be more than happy to answer them. To contact me, my email address is Adryan.dupre@doterragoodness.com. If you are interested in purchasing any oils, my website is www.mydoterra.com/adupre. Finally, I offer classes at the Katy Birth Center in Katy, TX every 2nd Thursday of the month. All are welcome to join, the more the merrier! Hope I’ll see you there J

Essential Oils and Bug Bites/Stings

I HATE mosquito's.  Did I mention that I H-A-T-E mosquito's?  Well, I do, I hate mosquito's.  And living where I live I have to deal with those pesky blood-suckers about 9 months out of the year.

Fortunately for me mosquito's do not find me very appetising, so unless they are out in great numbers I typically avoid that itchy bite even without using any form of repellent.  My husband and children, on the other hand, suffer in a way I have never seen before!  Honestly, any one of them (or all three of them) can be outside on a hot summer day with nightfall nowhere in site; mosquito's doing what they do to avoid the heat, and guess what?  They still get bitten.  My hubby usually only once, but my kids are like an all you can eat buffet.  Actually, it is so bad for the kids that, at the peak of mosquito season, even at night with all the windows shut and doors locked they still wake up in the morning with 1 to 3 new bites...yikes!!!  And, those bites swell up (sometimes to the size of grapes or golf balls), itch and bruise when healing.  The good news, I have essential oils to help me combat those itchy bites and aid in the healing process.  If I see a mosquito biting one of my kids and put the oils on immediately, the bites are almost undetectable!  That is a far cry from golf ball, bruising, itching welts.

No, this post is not just about the mosquito bite, but also includes all types of insect bites and stings.  Fire Ants.  Wasps.  Bees.  These are a few that come to my mind.

There are several essential oils recommended for aid in various bug bites (such as melrose, citronella, lavender, tea tree, peppermint, rosemary, copaiba, wintergreen, and many more when you start talking about oil blends) but I am only going to discuss the oils that my family and I use, how we use them and what effects we have seen. (Check out my previous essential oils post about using therapeutic grade essential oils only)

The oils I have used are Lavender, Purification and Peppermint from Young Living, and on occasion I use Lemongrass.

Any time someone has a bug bite in my family I immediately apply lavender on it in full strength.  In my experience this helps to soothe the area and stop the itching.  It also calms my kids down just by the fragrance, the attention they are getting and the gentle rubbing of the bite.  I also always apply the oils with prayer.  An example to this is my 18-month old stepping into an ant bed and receiving several bites before I could get the ants off of him.  I doused his feet in lavender and he never complained or itched them again!  Lavender also aids in the healing process to help eliminate scarring and bruising.

If a bite is particularly bad, or was not discovered at the time of the incident I first apply the Lavender for the reasons mentioned above, but I also apply Purification in full strength.  The properties of this oil blend help to draw out the poison and reduce swelling.  I always do this with my kiddos mosquito bites even when I catch that bug in action!  My daughter's bites are the worst in the family, so depending on the severity of a particular bite I may reapply a few times the first and second day.  Have you ever seen those kids with bite scabs all over their arms and legs because they can not stop scratching those pesky bites?  Well, my kids have never had those scabs because when we use the oils they do not feel the need to scratch!  If I do catch them beginning to scratch I then simply apply more oils.

If we had a truly sever bite, or several bites in one area I would also apply peppermint (I have only done this once or twice) over the lavender and purification.  Peppermint drives oils deeper, helps with pain, is great for skin conditions and can help to fight infection.  I always dilute peppermint in a carrier oil (like extra virgin olive oil) for my kids because it is a particularly strong oil.

So with all of those wonderful oils above why would you ever need Lemongrass?  I'm glad you asked!  Lemongrass is an amazing and very powerful oil that I actually dilute quite a bit no matter when I use it.  It has anti fungal, antibacterial, anti parasitic and anti-inflammatory properties (the latter being my favorite use for lemongrass).  It also helps to regenerate connective tissues and ligaments...so great for sprains and the like!  Both my hubby and my daughter have experienced mosquito bites that occurred directly in the joint (finger or ankle bone/joint) and the joint swell up so bad that they could not bend it and it really hurt!  That is when I pull out the Lemongrass and apply to the above regimen.  Good news, I have never had the need to reapply lemongrass; for us a single application is sufficient!

So why doesn't everyone in your family just use insect repellent ALL THE TIME?  Honestly?  Would you want to walk around with a layer of chemicals on your body at all times; even when you sleep?  No!  But I do make a wonderful DIY insect repellent from Young Living oils that works great!  We use it when we know we will be out and about during peak mosquito dining time.

Using Essential Oils for Tummy Upset

I have had so many friends and family suffering from tummy upset lately.  Before we get started I just want to remind the readers that all essential oils are NOT created equal.  Oils purchased from your local grocery store are for fragrance use only and should NEVER be used for wellness purposes.  If the label says ‘Do Not Eat or Ingest’ or has an expiration date then do not use it.  Only use Therapeutic grade essential oils.  Check out Young Living’s Seed To Seal quality promise.
Alright, LET’S GET STARTED!
My absolute favorite essential oil blend for sour tummy, gas issues and general tummy yuck is the Young Living blend Di-Gize.  In my experience, even in the most extreme cases, putting a drop or two of full strength Di-Gize in my belly button and/or on the bottom of my feet, starts to work quickly.  If a problem still persists I would recommend repeating as often as necessary!  I even use this full strength on my young children (1 year and 4 year old) in their belly buttons.  But, there is now a wonderful Kids Line of oils that includes Tummy Gize!!!!  I will be trying that on them next time.  If dealing with a really bad sour tummy I would even go so far as to drink a drop in hot tea or in a teaspoon of local honey!  Yeah, it probably would not taste that great, but if I felt that bad  I would tolerate the taste.
Another GREAT oil for tummies when the tummy problem is not so severe is Peppermint.  I use this one when my little girl tells me her tummy hurts, but there is no other sign of problems.  Again, I just put a drop or two (slightly diluted with a carrier oil) in her belly button and/or on the bottom of her feet.  Repeat as often as necessary.
Another wonderful thing about peppermint essential oil is that it both smells and tastes great.  You can use it for general pain, head discomfort, bruises, bad breath, occasional tiredness (like for the 3 ‘O Clock Pick-me-up), alleviate sinuses, itchy eyes and a wide myriad of other things.  It is great in hot tea or water (you may not want to use a full drop, but rather dip a toothpick in it and stir the tea or water with the toothpick) for daily use or enjoyment.  My mother uses it for head discomfort by rubbing it on her temples and dipping a toothpick in it and sucking on the toothpick.  You could also place a drop on your tongue and push your tongue on the roof of your mouth.  Peppermint is a very strong oil, so always dilute until you know how you like it.  Also, if using around the bony part of the eye or bridge of the nose for sinus discomfort be sure to really dilute and be aware that it may sting the eyes for several minutes or so even though you did not get the oil in your eyes…even the fumes of peppermint are strong!
Another great use for peppermint is aiding to regulate body temperature!  I know the mind reels at the thought of peppermint doing even more, but it does so much.  I always use peppermint as a first defense against rising body temperature in my children, but know that sometimes other means are necessary.  For my babies and young children I have always diluted peppermint and put it in the belly button, on the bottom of the feet, on the chest and back.  I know that sounds like a lot, but I like to attack.  I reapply as often as necessary and alternate with lukewarm baths.
Peppermint also helps to drive other oils deeper into the skin.  So if you use lavender and wanted to drive it deeper for some reason you could then apply peppermint over the same area.  Beware…it really does drive deeper, and if this is too intense apply a carrier oil over that same spot to dilute
Note: some nursing women have experienced milk reduction when using peppermint, so you may want to avoid.  I have not had this issue personally.  Please use common sense.
Enough about peppermint, this is a post about tummy upset…oops!
I also recommend talking to your health care provider before beginning any type of natural routine.
My family uses the oils for EVERYTHING.  Our personal philosophy is to apply the oils with prayer and discernment, then take further measures if necessary.
Other ways to help with a sour tummy: eat a healthy diet, drink lots of water, exercise, get good sleep and wash your hands.
My stock of oils is through Young Living Essential Oils, and I must say that I LOVE them.  I have always had positive and swift results using their oils and am confident in their product line.  They also sell wonderful cleaning products, hand sanitizer, personal hygiene products (soap, shampoo, toothpaste, skin care…) and more.  A couple of really nice things about Young Living is that they are International so you do not have to live here to order, and you can choose your shipping time.  Oh, and if you use a quickly vanishing product such as shampoo, supplements or other you can get on a monthly auto ship!
